With a significant expansion in role, the Kohanga Reo identified existing buildings at an adjacent Catholic Church. From here, work was completed in two stages.
Stage one – addition to and general refurbishment of the existing structure, including new kitchen, resource room, admin area, deck, and vital IEQ features such as heating and heat exchange ventilation systems.
Stage two – new staff facilities and redesign of outdoor play and learning spaces.
We introduced new hard surfaces, relocated play furniture, and improved circulation/movement, including a ‘race track’ for ride on toys.
To ensure careful management of internal air quality systems we explored the use of radiant heaters, and heat exchange ventilation to provide a healthy indoor environment, particularly through the cooler months, and with low annual operating costs. Marmoleum was selected over traditional vinyl floor coverings to reduce the release of VOC toxins into the space.
