Murali Bhaskar

Principal, New Plymouth

B.Arch, Manipal Institute of Technology, Mangalore, India

Registered Architect

Fellow/Architect NZ Institute of Architects

A lead design architect, Murali has the ability and experience to maximise the design potential of any project. He is passionate about environmentally sustainable design (ESD) and has worked with multi-disciplinary teams, large client organisations and iwi on various civic, community, hospitality, education and healthcare projects.

Born, raised and educated in India, Murali worked in India, Malaysia and Singapore before making New Zealand his home in 1987. Five years spent working for the planning and regulatory department of Palmerston North City Council gave him a deep insight into local government. He joined Team Architects’ New Plymouth branch in 1994, becoming a partner in 1999, and has since worked on a number of Taranaki’s biggest projects, including the New Plymouth Bus Station, the WOMAD Festival site, and more.

Murali has a special interest in a unique style of architecture that often blurs the boundaries between media, art, design and architecture. A design innovator, he loves storytelling through architecture, is fascinated by colour and constantly seeks opportunities to use it in his designs. His architecture also combines lighting, graphic design and illustration as distinctive design features.

A Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, Murali is a former NZIA Council member. He is a trustee of the Taranaki Health Foundation, and of the New Plymouth District Art in Public Places Trust, and is also involved in Accelerator and Taranaki Futures. Murali has been a judge for the Taranaki Daily News Fashion Art Awards, Taranaki Stage Challenge, and the Dulux Colour Awards.
