Simon enjoys running a dynamic architectural practice and working with clients to create high quality architecture. He believes that within the inevitable tension between design ideas, budget constraints and the client’s brief is the space where creativity can flourish.
Proactive, and adept at quickly grasping the key issues and creating design solutions to solve them, he still uses sketch pens to develop a response that’s tailored to each client and site.
Simon has substantial experience in design and documentation for a wide variety of projects including tertiary education, health, commercial buildings and high-end residential. The ‘Wall Street’ Retail Development in Dunedin ($21m) was completed in 2009 and Simon played a key role in the design and construction of this mixed-use project in the heart of the city’s retail precinct.
Currently the project director and lead architect for the $40m University of Otago chemistry building, Simon has received at least eight NZIA branch awards for his designs and was previously chair of the NZIA Southern Branch.
Raised in Dunedin, he worked in London for five years on large retail and commercial projects. After returning to New Zealand in 2002 he joined Warburton Team Architecture and became a director of the firm in 2004.
Beyond the office, he enjoys music, keeping fit, spending time with his family, and exploring new cities and cultures.
