This 1925 building with its classical theatre space was first upgraded in 1980 under the directorship of Terry Boon Architects. Up to that time it had been under threat of demolition. This initial work secured its existence. Then in 1997 further redevelopment was initiated. The existing TSB Theatre provides 970 seats, which is now complemented with the Theatre Royal (440 seats) and the new 200 seat Alexandra Room. The new theatres are flexible with removable and rearrangable seating, and caster for all manner of events. All theatres are linked by extensive foyers with plentiful refreshment and toilet facilities. The Theatre Royal has ahd the fly gallery extended and incorporates a new counterweight stage rigging system.
