Amethyst Hydro Power Station is a functional, low maintenance building, which houses a 7.7 megawatt hydro-electric generator.
The power station is fed by water from the river bed of the Amethyst River high up in the mountains and delivered through 2.5km of tunnel & underground pipe into the base of the building. The discharge water flows out into the Wanganui River, north of Harihari.
The brief for the building was for it to be simple, low maintenance construction, contain the noise generated and have a removable roof structure so the generator or parts of it could be lifted out in the future for maintenance or replacement.
The building was designed with pre-cast concrete panels and pre-fabricated steel roof, to minimize work required on the remote site. The roof can be lifted off in two sections, with 4 lifting eyes incorporated into each section.
