Bell Kelly Beaumont Team Architects worked with GHD on the extensive upgrade of existing High Commission Building in Wellington. The scope of work included the upgrade of building services, replacement of all fenestration, full refurbishment of the chancellery facilities, and significant changes to the public and representation spaces on the ground floor.
The building is a significant Thorndon landmark. Clad in white marble tiles, with horizontal bands of reflective glazing, it is a good example of the late international style of the twentieth century.
The work retained the character of the building exterior and the significant interior features, including the granite floors and tiled walls of the ground floor spaces with the voids to the first floor. The original modernist chandeliers were retained, while the rear balcony is now enclosed by full height glazing.
Security and safety concerns led to a major reworking of the physical security offered by the building.
