The design concept for the proposed Station was to provide a new contemporary building that would link to the existing main station and cellblock, while maintaing an optimal functional response to the breif. This link, also created the new entry where both old and new extend from it. The attachement to the existing main station is minimal and maintains its separate identity as an historically significant building. The brief included an agreement with the NZHPT that required the new building to "be designed and detailed in sympathy with the existing heritage buildings". Our approach to this was not replication, but rather proportional connection. The new building picks up on the existing symmetry and rationalises the approach to detail.
