Campbell House

This residential collaboration presented the design team with the challenge of working with a site with a magical view of  Wellington harbour but an existing small semi-detached house with ‘70’s pseudo Spanish style, that is, swirling plaster exterior texture and curved arches inside, all perched on a steep hillside.

The completed home has had to manage that dichotomy between the sun and views commonly experienced on the Wellington western hills.  A new front entrance was created on the more sheltered western edge of the property from which the view of the city to the south leads the visitors past a sheltered courtyard into the living spaces that are strung out along the hillside to maximise the views.  The interior spaces have been kept simple in form and colour, trying not to compete with the brilliance of the views.  Additional interior living spaces were created by accepting the realities of Wellington weather and reducing the area of south facing deck, creating a new living space from which the owners can watch the southerly roll across the harbour warm and cosy in their elegant home.
