Hopkinson/Eder House

Serpentine, West Coast

This new home sites comfortably on the coastal terrace above the mouth of the Taramakau River, with uninterrupted views of the river, Coast and the Paparoa Ranges. While the wind loadings were deemed to be very high, the house site is surprisingly sheltered from the prevailing winds. Access from the highway is deliberately taken through the coastal podocarp forest to a sheltered yard, the new home forming a wall that screens the coastal views. Conceived as "an elegant beach house", this was to be a retirement home for the owners, with self contained rooms for family and friends. A flexible arrangement allows two ensuited rooms to be used as an apartment , an office and bedroom, or two separate rooms. A studio adjacent to the living room provides a work space for art and design.
