An inner-city hideaway located adjacent to the city’s coveted Pukekura Park. The design needed to reflect this stunning locale. The clients, who are timber suppliers to the construction industry and have a close affinity for the beach and coast, had very clear notions on what they required from their build - “We wanted a statement entry, and we wanted to showcase the amazing views that this site offered”. The design resulted in a 2 level, high tech build with 3 x guest bedrooms, a large master bedroom and loads of extra features with a definite WOW factor upon entry. A coastal vibe was integrated into the design, giving a relaxed feel to the home.
From the street, the home makes an impressive design statement, with the huge custom built fins that are illuminated during the evening to produce that WOW factor that the clients had requested. The fins also double as a privacy screen for the roof top deck. Entering the home you are received by a wash of coastal ambiance, with the polished concrete floors detailed with beach coloured stones and the American white oak timber balustrading. It all melts into a coastal atmosphere accentuated by the amazing local artwork on display.
A warmth oozes from the natural timber materials and earthy tones used throughout the spaces. From the placement of the artwork adorning the walls, to the custom joinery unit which is an artwork in itself, every detail has been meticulously planned and crafted. The home was fitted with the latest Control4 home automation technology from Techknow so the clients can control the lights, window dressings, entertainment and security systems all from the palm of their hands with their iPhones and remote controls.
Lighting also has been impeccably thought out, with Moth Lighting illuminating all the features throughout the home, including the bespoke glass sculpture by Richard Landers which was designed to mimic the angled interior joinery. The living and dining area spreads out from the stairway, with the kitchen island a design statement on its own. The cleverly angled island front provides a perfect ergonomic fit for those sitting at the breakfast bar. One of the client’s favourite features is the built-in window seat that extends out from the kitchen area creating a perfect spot to read in the morning and afternoon sun.
Outdoor entertainment was also important to the clients; however the inclement Taranaki weather makes this a challenge in many conditions. The solution was the designation of 3 separate outdoor living spaces on this level, on the eastern, northern and western aspects of the house. The roof is overlaid in river stones to create a coastal feeling when lounging on the roof top deck. Relaxing in the lounger with the river stones in the foreground and the sea views in the distance, you could be forgiven for thinking you had found a beach front property in the heart of the city.
Packed with features too numerous to mention, this home was designed with the clients in mind, incorporating all their wish list into one magical inner-city coastal sanctuary.
