Ivey West and Memorial Hall are two significant heritage buildings at the heart of the Lincoln University campus. Both sustained substantial damage during the 2010 Canterbury earthquake, prompting a commitment from the University to retain, strengthen, restore, and adaptively reuse these landmark buildings.
Team Architects Christchurch design approach balanced the University's functional requirements with the considered conservation of each building's heritage character. Working to retain much of the existing fabric, we developed solutions that strengthened the buildings for future use while respecting their architectural and historical significance.
Memorial Hall was constructed in 1924 as a memorial to those who served in the First World War and was restored to its original form while integrating a new structural system and contemporary teaching technologies. The revitalised hall now supports a wide range of university and community activities, from lectures and seminars to ceremonies and special events.
Ivey West, built in 1880 as student accommodation, has evolved through successive uses over its lifetime. Earthquake damage provided an opportunity to reimagine the interior, creating flexible teaching, meeting, and office spaces while retaining and restoring key heritage features, including the building's prominent central stairwell and other significant architectural elements.
Together, the restoration of Ivey West and Memorial Hall reconnects Lincoln University's historic foundations with its contemporary campus, ensuring these important heritage buildings continue to serve future generations.
