The new Theosophical Society Building is a rebuild project, following the demolition of the original heritage Theosophical Building, which was damaged beyond repair in the Canterbury earthquakes of 2011. The new design responds to its heritage past and reinterprets these qualities through a contemporary lens. Located in the central city, the building has two street frontages and overlooks the Avon River.
The building’s main meeting space opens onto a reflective, covered cloister that forms the central organizing element of the site. The cloister provides a considered transition between spaces and facilitates circulation to the principal facilities, including the library, meeting rooms and associated utility spaces.
The project also incorporates a new guest cottage, designed in a complementary architectural language and carefully oriented towards Kilmore Street.
The interior prioritises natural, durable and high-quality finishes, while the library houses the Society’s valuable collection of books.
The project was recognised with a Christchurch Civic Trust Award in 2025.
