The Trinity Church (1875) and the Shands Building (1860) are among the oldest surviving buildings in Christchurch. Both sustained severe damage during the Canterbury earthquakes, leaving their future uncertain. Their preservation was secured when they were acquired by the Christchurch Heritage Trust, which partnered with Team Architects Christchurch to undertake a comprehensive heritage restoration and adaptive reuse project. The buildings now house the popular hospitality venues The Church and Paddy McNaughtons Pub.
The Shands building was relocated from its original location on Hereford Street to sit adjacent the church, connected with a thoughtfully considered glass link, and an extension to the back for the buildings utilities and commercial kitchen.
The retention and relocation of the Shands Building, alongside the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Trinity Congregational Church, stand as a significant example of heritage preservation in the aftermath of the widespread loss of historic buildings during the Canterbury earthquakes.
